the truth: You Can’t fix what you can’t see

Swimming is an incredibly technique sensitive sport because water is dense. Which makes swimming very difficult to master as an athlete, let alone to teach, as a coach.
Some of the biggest challenges for athletes and coaches in our sport are:
COACHES can’t really see from the deck where and how most of the action is taking place… under water. For two reasons- swimmers shield their arms with their bodies and light bends as it crosses from air into water.
SWIMMERS can’t really gauge their movements in detail as they are practicing and racing, especially inexperienced/young athletes. It’s because the arm, leg and trunk movements are so fast (especially at race speeds) that there’s simply almost no chance to cerebrate about the details. Plus being in water makes everything even more confusing sensory processing wise.
All those details matter a lot in swimming though, perhaps more than in any other (land-based) sport. We all know it, but how do you get the details right?
The best solution to these problems is regularly incorporating video monitoring and analysis to practices. Other sports have used video for decades, but in the swimming world, so far, this technology is under-utilized, because it has always been difficult to film (well and efficiently) underwater without very expensive specialized equipment.
Until recently…
How it works?
A SIMPLE, YET VERSATILE SOLUTION FOR SWIMMING TECHNIQUE FILMING

The Old Problems
You want to see what your swimmers are doing underwater, but filming swimmers under water can be tricky, expensive and time consuming because:
- Wireless signals (WiFi and Bluetooth) don’t work in water, so it’s hard to control simple action cameras remotely from the deck and/or see live video for instant feedback
- Built-in custom made systems are prohibitively expensive, if not impossible to implement at most pools/clubs/teams
- Few companies that do it in US in their own facilities in various ways, charge thousands of dollars per one time, but you should see technique at least a few times a year to make necessary corrections. Preferably much more often than that, for significant changes to actually take effect and stay for good.
- Editing video well takes more time than filming it and not everyone has the know-how, nor the computer software/hardware, to consistently and efficiently do it themselves.
- Jerry-rigging something (AKA the good old “GoPro and Selfie Stick” method)… is doable, for sure… but will often produce questionable (out of frame/focus, shaky) results and you can’t see the footage on a screen as you are filming/watching. It’s also impractical, if not impossible, to use with a larger group of swimmers, vs. just one or two. That makes it rarely worth it, time and hassle wise, for a busy small team/club coach or owner.
A New Solution
What’s one to do? Do some info-digging and just build our own rig, of course. Ideally one that solves all of those problems mentioned above and then some. Easier said than done, but…
Yes, we are coaches (as well as parents of budding swimmers and ex-international level competitors) ourselves, so we had the same problems- the need to teach athletes correct technique, both for speed and also for injury prevention reasons… but no means to do it well and consistently with large groups of swimmers and/or… without spending a ton of money.
We wanted a set-up that’s:
- Portable, not fixed, so we can use it in different areas of the pool and move it around easily
- Able to cover all angles, both over and under the water
- Easy to set-up and break down
- Able to hold multiple cameras, as well as multiple screens, simultaneously
- Able to see live stream footage and record under water from the deck
- Safe enough to use around pool full of kids, so steady and NO external power source required
- Efficient enough for us to quickly film kids in large groups and then create technique review videos for them to view at home or with a coach
- Reasonably priced
After mucho elbow grease, brainstorming, testing and experimenting we finally have it… and sure as heck use it on a (very) regular basis with our own swimmers.
Anyway, click on the button below and get the full story of exactly HOW IT WORKS. Or, take a look at a bunch of (video) samples, guides, tricks and tips we gathered from our experience filming hundreds of swimmers, to show you what’s possible, in our RESOURCES section.
(Quick Aside: You can totally use all this info to build your own setup from the start and start using video to help your swimmers- Our contribution to the “For the good of the sport of swimming” cause, apparently, so go nuts if you wish. We’re cool with it and you’re welcome!)
Also, in the same vein of goodwill, check out YOUR OPTIONS for renting our gear, buying it, or just hiring us to do all the work for you, including technique analysis added rght to videos. At very affordable prices, too!
But enough pontificating about the bigger picture and our own greatness, just go take a look at what we came up with already…

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE THE BEST OF SWIM TECHNIQUE FILMING
Want to know how it’s done? Got the equipment, but don’t know what to do? Need some advice on best angles and what to film? Need some editing tips? Want to see some samples? Well…
FAQs
How much pool time and space do I need?
We can film for about 20 swimmers, each doing 2 strokes, in 2 hours, including setup and breakdown. But we’ve had lots of practice. So probably a little more time for you the first time around. All you need is one end lane (closest to wall)!
Is it hard to set up the equipment?
No. It’s pretty straight-forward. See the video of it HERE.
What happens if something breaks?
Accidents happen, we get it. But this equipment is not exactly cheap to replace. You are responsible for breakage and there is a $500 refundable security deposit with each rental. The price list is HERE.
How can I pay?
We take credit cards, checks, Zelle and Venmo.
Is there a minimum charge or number of people for EZ sessions?
Yes, $1200. In any combination of swimmers/events, be it 3 swimmers doing everything (3 X $400), or 12 swimmers doing 2 strokes each (12 X 2 X $50).
What software do you use on deck and for editing?
GoPro Quik on the poolside for filming and monitoring (cameras and tablets are pre-connected for you) and Davinci Resolve for editing post filming. Complete tutorial on how to use GoPro Quik for monitoring and filming on the poolside is HERE. You can use whatever software you want to edit together videos for your swimmers for later viewing.
Do you have a money back guarantee if I’m not happy?
Yes, we have a 100% No-Questions-Asked Money Back Guarantee, that’s how confident we are that you will love the results. If you are not happy for any reason, we will refund you fully. Period.
How and when is the equipment delivered for my rental?
We will deliver the equipment in the morning of the first day (before noon) and pick it up on the last day’s evening as late as 9pm.
What’s the quality of footage when you deliver the “reviews”?
Although we usually film in 4K and 120 FPS, we will generally deliver the videos in 1080p resolution and 60 FPS for file size reasons. The videos will include all the footage in normal speed, as well as 4X slow motion for ease of viewing.
How are the videos delivered?
We upload them into a drop box and send you a link to view and download them to your personal device. We delete all videos after 3 months from Dropbox, so make sure to download them before that.
How fast after filming can I get my videos?
Our usual turnaround time is 1-2 weeks, sometimes faster.
Do swimmers have to have current USA Swimming memberships?
Yes, like in a regular practice, all those on deck should have current and valid USA Swimming memberships.
Can I connect the tablets to a bigger screen for better on-deck reviewing?
Yes, via HDMI, we’ll provide a 10Ft cable to connect and mirror pretty much any screen from the control tablet(s)
